In 2008, MH2 was one of two specimens found encased in cave deposits at the Malapa site in Gauteng Province, South Africa. It is likely that the hominins fell to their deaths down the shaft of a limestone cavern where they were then washed into a sediment trap4. Both specimens date to between 1.78 to 1.95 Ma1. Some anthropologists have placed Australopithecus sediba as an ancestral link between the australopiths and Homo, while others consider it too young to be an ancestor to Homo.
